About Joan Sobel

When I began painting at age 50, I had no idea the extent to which it would change my life. Art, very simply, makes me whole.  It satisfies a place in me untouched by all the blessings I have collected in life.  Making art rounds out my full sense of purpose, commitment and accomplishment.

I began taking classes and workshops at local art centers – without these important institutions my artist journey would not have progressed past the doodling stage. This early training was the breath that got me started and my early mentors continue to shape my work. Through the years, and particularly during and after covid, my training was enhanced by the plethora of classes available online from artists all over the world.

In 2023 I made the decision to take my studio from a lovely room in my home to Aston Mills Arts. With that move came the space and freedom to be uninterrupted while I worked and gave me the space and time to be curious, fully present and more creative in my art.

My Process

The process by which I work is truly intuitive. I rarely begin with a plan, but rather let the composition emerging on the canvas, and the materials at hand guide the piece forward. It involves mark making, application of paint, removal of paint, scratching, scribbling, creating drips and most importantly stepping back to allow the painting to speak. It is through this call and response and in trusting my inner voice that the final composition emerges. Thus, the fulfilment in creating a beloved piece of art.

I am lucky to have met so many passionate people along this journey.  Fellow artists, art collectors, those that inspire and some who are inspired by what I am doing.  Chatting with folks who visit my studio brings me great pleasure and hopefully sparks a curiosity about the world of art, which is all around us.  Aston Mills Arts has periodic shows where nearly every studio is open.  In addition to that, my studio is open by appointment.
